Becoming an Australian Citizen
Every year, the Townsville City Council welcomes hundreds of Townsville residents as new Australian citizens. Citizenship Ceremonies are held every month throughout the year to present certificates and giftpacks to formally welcome new citizens. This special occasion welcomes members of many cultures into the Australian family and celebrates this important milestone in their lives.
If you are interested in becoming an Australian citizen, please contact the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) on 131 880 or visit www.citizenship.gov.au.
Applying
You must apply to become an Australian citizen. Application forms can be obtained from the Council, any Australia Post office or from www.citizenship.gov.au. A fee is payable when applying for citizenship. You will be required to go through an approval process, including an interview. Refer to the DIAC website for more information.
Council is the last link in the application process. Once your application for citizenship has been approved, your certificate will be sent to Council, at which time you will be contacted to arrange a suitable time for your citizenship ceremony. The Mayor of Townsville City has been delegated the authority to confer your citizenship.
