Key Principles
In partnership with the local community, key principles have been developed to guide the project. These are:
A place for people
Above all, the Riverway Upper Ross Community Hub will be a place for all people and through its combination of community and commercial uses and attractive public spaces, will become a platform for local civic life.
A tropical centre
The single greatest opportunity to ensure that the Riverway Upper Ross Community Hub is a distinctive, and memorable place is to provide a strong design response to its climatic setting.
Bringing the park to the hub, and the hub to the park
A central tenet of the Riverway Upper Ross Community Hub is to reconnect Apex Park and the Ross River with the community centre by reducing barriers associated with the prevailing topography and Riverway Drive.
A green hub
The Riverway Upper Ross Community Hub builds on the established, attractive green character of the area and includes new tree lined streets and improved connections between the community facilities/retail core and the river.
The two key open space elements, Allambie Lane and Apex Park will be enhanced to provide the centre with robust, adaptable and useable green spaces that promote climatically responsive and sustainable outcomes.
Flexibility and responsiveness
Sustainable urban environments need to be adaptable. The adaptability of individual sites, buildings and public spaces is important not only to provide for physical change but also to allow for cultural and social changes. The most successful places are products of growth over time, shaped by, and able to accommodate changing economic conditions, development aspirations and cultural diversity. Ultimately, the Riverway Upper Ross Community Hub framework seeks to balance the need for certainty with the requirement for flexibility.
Visual richness
Memorable places accommodate exceptional experiences for users through the use of lighting, public art, architecture and festival. All of these elements will come together at the Riverway Upper Ross Community Hub, to create a place of visual richness.
