Council puts out call for youth to DIY in Youth Week

Date: Thursday, 3rd September 2009

If you’re aged 12 to 25 and have a big idea for a live event, Townsville Youth Council wants to hear from you!

Following the success of the Townsville City Council’s Create Your Youth Week 2009, Townsville Youth Council is now on the hunt for inspirational youth ideas that can be transformed into Townsville-based National Youth Week activities for 2010.

Youth Development Coordinator Christine Neiland said National Youth Week aimed to create the largest national event calendar and celebration for young people.

"The Council`s Youth Development Team first conceptualised the Create Your Youth Week competition as an opportunity to give the young people of Townsville the power and ability to imagine, develop and implement their own celebrations and activities during National Youth Week,” she said.

"After all, who would know better about entertaining young people than the young people themselves?”

2009 Create Your Youth Week activities included photography workshops and displays, dance competitions, social sporting contests, and a youth rock out.

Ms Neiland said the council was accepting applications for 2010 now.

“The sky is the limit! It could be a hip hop workshop, a skate or BMX display, or a giant pool party. As long as the event is broad enough to interest a lot of people your age it will be considered,” she said.

Successful entries will be supported by Townsville City Council youth development officers who will help with planning, budgeting, financial support, promotions and event assistance on the day.

Applications close 30 October 2009.
