Big time AFL comes to Townsville

An interstate clash between the Queensland Maroons and Western Australian Sandgropers will headline an action-packed 2008 Australian Football League (AFL) season in Townsville.

Tickets for the star-studded June 7 match went on sale this week, with big names like Shane Woewoedin and Daryl White expected to help draw a 5000-strong crowd.

The local AFL season kicked off on the weekend, with a clash between rivals Thuringowa Bulldogs and Curra Swans.

AFL Queensland`s Regional Manager for Townsville Richie Lyons said round one had been a long time coming, but the AFL community were really excited about the first games, and looking forward to a competitive season.

The newly built Tony Ireland Stadium will be the focal point for the local matches, as well as host ground for the East v West game.

Stadium Manager Ben Payne said luring the match to Townsville was a major coup for the region.

"This is the first time a game of this calibre has been played in the city and it`s a fantastic opportunity for fans to see some of the best quality AFL played outside the National League," Mr Payne said.

"Some of the codes` recently retired stars, including Brownlow medallist Shane Woewoedin and three times premiership winning ex-Brisbane Lion Daryl White, will line up alongside an array of up and coming talent right here in our own backyard. It`s sure to be a great show."

Mr Payne said the future was looking bright for AFL in Townsville, with management hoping to secure a pre-season national NAB Cup game at the Stadium in 2009.

"A facility the standard of Tony Ireland Stadium is a great asset for the region, and we want to see more events like this and the recent Twenty20 cricket match played in the city.

"AFL Queensland will be keeping a close eye on how things proceed over the course of the weekend and if the match is well supported we will certainly be in the running to host the NAB Cup game."

Mr Payne said there was still plenty of time for fans to grab tickets to the match, to be held over the Queen`s Birthday long weekend.

Tickets cost $10 - $15 for adults and $5 - $10 for kids, with family passes for $25. Tickets are available from the Riverway Arts Centre Box Office, online at www.riverway.townsville.qld.gov.au/events or by phoning 4773 8889.
