Townsville’s economic diversity and potential for development mean that our city is set to become an increasingly important location for Queensland’s future growth.

Townsville City Council is requesting funding for five priority community projects by the Queensland Government over its next term of office.

These projects will help sustain Townsville’s strong population and economic growth by ensuring critical infrastructure for major business and sporting events, road capacity and safety, tourism and community development.

New Townsville Entertainment and Convention Centre

Townsville's potential to become one of Queensland's leading business event destinations remains unfulfilled because of the lack of high-class, purpose built convention facilities. Townsville City Council is proposing to construct a new, state-of-the-art entertainment and convention centre that would be located at Dean Street.

Northern Approaches Flood Mitigation

Three critical flood points along Townsville's northern approaches are located at Blakey's Crossing on Ingham Road, and the Bohle River crossing on Woolcock Street and Dalrymple Road. Townsville City Council has developed a bridge and road reconstruction program to secure wet season access along these major access routes for the Northern Beaches community.

Upper Ross Arterial Road Upgrade

Sustained population growth in the Upper Ross is leading to increasing traffic congestion along Riverway Drive, undermining vehicle and pedestrian safety along this heavily used arterial road. To secure long term and safe transport access for residents of the Upper Ross, Townsville City Council is proposing the major upgrade of Riverway Drive, with further capacity provided by accompanying improvements to nearby Beck Drive.

Castle Hill Community Recreation Project

Recreational activity on Castle Hill has increased markedly in recent years, intensifying demand for safer walking access and new sight-seeing facilities. Townsville City Council has developed a unique upgrade project that will build an observation platform along Castle Hill Road, while also installing solar street lighting to improve visibility for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists.

Northern Beaches Community Centre

The quality of the community and family lifestyle available at the Northern Beaches area risks being eroded by increasing pressure on youth, sporting, social and recreational services. Townsville City Council has undertaken long term planning for the establishment of a new community centre located at Peggy Banfield Park in Bushland Beach, which will become a focal point for recreation and neighbourhood activity.
