Parkland bookings 

Parkland Events

Community Services - Business Support handles the bookings for all events/functions/ceremonies for ALL Parklands throughout Townsville (including Pioneer Park at Riverway). On average over 1,200 bookings are made each year. These bookings range from small events such as wedding and naming ceremonies, charity walks, fundraisers and private functions, through to parades, memorial services, and a range of events including community sports, arts, culture, dance, song, and music.

Events are approved under the Use of Open Space Policy. The number of events held on The Strand is capped by management to ensure the amenity values of The Strand are not depleted through excessive usage.

General Conditions of Use:

  • Alcohol is not permitted to be consumed in parklands
  • The area is to be left in a clean and tidy condition
  • No vehicles are to enter parklands unless approved
  • Glass bottles or containers are not permitted in parklands
  • No fires are be lit within the parklands

Wedding or naming ceremonies

Wedding or naming ceremonies may be approved on The Strand at the following locations:

  • Rock Pool Headland
  • Landsborough Street Headland
  • Stuart Street Headland (adjacent the entrance to Strand Pier)
  • Burke Street Headland (adjacent to the Picnic Bay Surf Club)
  • Gregory Street Headland
  • Tobruk Pool (grassed area adjacent to Pool)
  • Anzac Park: Rotunda, Parkland left or right of Centenary Fountain
  • Ceremonies are now approved on The Strand beach south of the Gregory Street headland only.

Ceremonies are not approved for the Strand Pier (jetty).

Wedding or naming ceremonies may be approved in most other Parklands: (most popular listed)

  • Queens Gardens: Rose garden, Herb garden, Raintree lawn (Kennedy St), Play lawn, Palm lawn, Lipstick lawn, Rainforest lawn, Frangipani lawn.
  • Palmetum: Tokuyama gardens (Summerhouse), Harold E Moore Crescent, Lagoon area or Savannah zone, Xerophytic zone, Rainforest (The Island area), Rainforest (Picnic area), Carl Von Martius Way.
  • Anderson Gardens: Ficus lawn, Lotus ponds, Palm lawn or Pandanus area, Cape York area, Rockery, Tropical conifers, Orchard, Rainforest area.
  • Riverside Gardens: Riverfront Park: Viewing platform (not pontoon), Monument Park: Amphitheatre.
  • Dan Gleeson Memorial Gardens: Pond area, Central rotunda, Front rotunda.

Restrictions:

  • Locations may only be booked for a one hour period
  • Confetti or rice is not permitted in parklands
  • No outdoor wedding receptions are permitted in parklands
  • Only portable, self-supporting marquees/shelters are permitted
  • The area is to be left in a clean and tidy condition
  • No vehicles are to enter the parklands or Strand promenade

Bookings

To arrange a booking for an event or ceremony, please contact the Community Services - Business Support Booking Office via 1300 878 001 to discuss availability for your event or ceremony. Fees and charges apply.

You will be advised in writing when your booking is approved. NO booking is confirmed until you receive and sign the Event Agreement and pay the required hire fee and/or security deposit.

Key Deposits - will be required where a key is to be issued. Key deposits are to be paid in cash at Community Services - Business Support reception (on the last working day before the event). The deposit is refundable pending return of the key (on the first working day after the event).

Damage Deposits – may be required for specific events. The deposit is refundable pending an inspection of the park and is exempt from GST. The deposit will be invoiced prior to the event and must be paid at least 5 working days before the event.

Cancellations – the Hirer may cancel the booking by giving council notice of its intention to cancel the booking. The cancellation form must be received by Community Services - Business Support at least 5 working days before the event, otherwise fees paid to date will not be refunded.
