Fun day to celebrate new facilities at West Lions Park
Date: Friday, 3rd July 2009
New facilities in the Western Lions Park in Heatley will be showcased tomorrow (Saturday, July 4) as part of a community fun day from 1pm to 4pm.
Attendees will be able to test out the playground equipment, check out the new facilities such as solar lighting, footpaths, BBQ facilities, shade structures, landscaping and more. There will also be a free sausage sizzle, an animal farm and live entertainment.
The Queensland Government’s Community Renewal program contributed more than $240,000 towards the project, while Townsville City Council provided more than $190,000 in funding and also delivered the project.
Member for Mundingburra Ms Lindy Nelson-Carr MP said the improvements include new playground facilities as well as shelters and an undercover area that will be available for the members of the local Western Lions Football Club and other park users.
“Families have access to new playground equipment and facilities that provide a safe and accessible area to take the kids to play,” Ms Nelson-Carr said.
“The playground equipment has a focus on children up to five years, with an emphasis on safety and all-abilities access.”
Mayor of Townsville, Cr Les Tyrell said the improvements had been made after the council had consulted with local residents on how they wanted their local park developed.
“The fun day provides a great opportunity for people to come along and see what improvements have been made,” Cr Tyrell said.
