Programmed Reading Collection for Adult Literacy

Our Programmed Reading Collection is a graduated scheme beginning with large print titles and accompanying cassette tapes/CDs, moving to medium print editions with tapes/CDs, and then normal print editions without audio.
Students are then encouraged to progress to junior non-fiction - located in the adult section - or to adult large print fiction.
Finally students advance to ordinary adult material.
This collection is only available at the CityLibraries- Flinders Street.
There is something for tutors, teachers, and students alike. The collection is categorised into five different areas using distinctive colour-coded:
- Black - material designed to expand tutor knowledge.
- Brown - resource material for tutors and students, or for students working alone.
- Green - beginner level fiction and non fiction recreational reading.
- Blue - intermediated level fiction and non-fiction recreational reading.
- White - material for Culturally And Linguistically Diverse (CALD) students.
Teachers may be interested in arranging a tour to familiarise students with the library and its resources. The tour includes:
- how to join the library,
- the Programmed Reading Collection,
- the World Language Collection,
- the Living History and Local History Collections
- our public internet terminals, and
- for CALD students, how to access information and newspapers in their native language.
