All Abilities Playground
Background
The All Abilities Playground Project Riverway, Townsville began in late 2007 after council was successful in securing a grant through Disability Services Queensland. The funding is part of a state-wide scheme to build 16 all abilities play spaces across Queensland. Townsville City Council was granted $204,050 with a council contribution of $250,000. Devine Limited and Leighton Properties also contributed $29,000 towards to construction of the playground. The play space concept has been designed by council’s landscape architect Lucilla Marshall and developed in collaboration with the community including school groups, disability groups, special schools, Local medical groups including physiotherapists and occupational therapists, interested community groups, local community, Riverway user groups (sporting clubs) and the Community Steering Committee the Umbrella Network.
The project's intention was to create a great space where children come together to play, explore, image, dream and grow along the banks of the Ross River. This recreational space uses a range of natural and built elements to encourage all types of play, including a tree house, musical sound garden and a girant turtle sand play area.
Objectives
The objectives were to design, develop, and construct a community play space that is designed by and for the community to ensure equal accessibility for all. It will be a play space that is like no other in Townsville; a place that engages users in all areas of physical, social, creative, imaginative, senses, and learning aspects of play. We are creating a place that all families across the region can come and interact. The playground has been designed to integrate with the Riverway Lagoons and weave along the Ross River bank.
