Cultural Development

The role of Cultural Development is to develop and encourage participation in a broad range of arts, cultural, and community opportunities for the residents of Townsville.
This is achieved in a number of ways including
- Providing information about resources to community groups, arts organisations, and local artists.
- Providing financial assistance to the community through:
- Identifying the Townsville community's arts and cultural needs and developing strategies to meet these needs.
- Providing advice to Council on the development and planning of arts and cultural facilities, services and programs.

Previous Cultural Plans
Townsville City Council is currently rewriting its Cultural Policy and developing an Action Plan to meet the needs of the city. With a population of 170,000 urban and rural residents, the Cultural Plan will consult with a wide cross section of the population to assess and plan for Council’s contribution to Arts and Culture over the next five years.
A community committee of key arts and cultural leaders has been formed to assist the process of developing a new plan. A number of practical activities open to participation by the general public have been planned including community arts projects that will ‘map’ what we value about our life in Townsville. These will be advertised through the Arts E Bulletin and local media and everyone is invited to join in with these activities.
