Safe Food Handling

Everyone must eat food and are therefore at risk of becoming ill from food poisoning. Each year it is estimated that more than five million Australians get sick from eating food that wasn't safe. Food safety is an important issues. That's why businesses are required to ensure the food they handle, store, display and sell is safe and in a suitable condition for consumption.

How Council interacts with Businesses

Council monitors the standard of operation of food businesses and this is acheived by licensing, education and enforcement to ensure food businesses are compliant with food legislation.

People can become seriously ill if the food is mishandled or not stored correctly. For this reason, Council employs experienced Environmental Health officers (EHOs) to inspect licensed food businesses on a regular basis.

If a food business fails to comply with the Food Safety Standards or their licence conditions, it may result in serious action being taken by Council including on-the-spot fines, suspension of the licence or prosecution.
