Townville Economic Gateway
Townsville is a city in transition. A city where culture, commerce and trade, meet to create regional Australia’s most exciting and liveable CBD. A CBD where fun and games mix with city living and working wharves, to produce a diversity that is uniquely Townsville.
Townsville Economic Gateway provides the strategic vision that integrates the complex interests of a diversified economy – balancing economic, social and environmental goals. It recognises the inseparable links between the city and its industry, and the wealth creating trade that drives them both.
Townsville’s skyline is scattered with cranes. A symbol of the revitalisation that is transforming the inner city into a major economic and cultural hub, this development is driven by a newfound confidence in Townsville’s position as Australia’s leading tropical city. With more than $2.5 billion in development, the revitalisation of the CBD is underway. Within the decade the CBD will be transformed with significant new residential, retail, hospitality and cultural development.
At the heart of the region’s prosperity, the Port of Townsville is developing to meet the demand for North Queensland trade. Master Planning has identified the potential for a trebling in trade over the next 23 years. In order to facilitate this growth, staged improvements and expansions have been planned. New and upgraded berths, land reclamation, improved transport and storage facilities and strategically positioned land developments are planned to accommodate demand and facilitate the future prosperity of the region.
Linking the Port to the Townsville State Development Area at Stuart, the Townsville Port Eastern Access Corridor will divert heavy vehicles from the suburbs, improving Port access and efficiency as well as the amenity and safety of residents. At the mouth of Ross River is the proposed Marine Industries Precinct, complete with boat building, maintenance and service facilities, chandlery, marine engineering services, commercial fishing fleet facilities and improved ramp access for recreational boating.
The Townsville State Development Area was declared in 2003 by the Queensland Government in recognition of the strategic importance of this land; both for existing industries and potential future development. The Coordinator-General ensures development is well planned and balanced in a way which meets the needs of industry, the community and the environment. The Townsville State Development Area will provide new opportunities for value added minerals processing and transport and distribution services connecting Northern Australia to the Asia Pacific region.
