Infiltration and inflow study of sewers
Townsville Water is carrying out an inspection program of sewers and private house drains of all premises, through smoke testing, in declared sewer areas pursuant to Section 1098 of the Local Government Act 1993.
Inspectors will inspect all properties in each declared sewer area during the program period. Smoke testing enables the council to determine locations of illegal stormwater connections into the sewer reticulation system.
To determine these locations the following steps are taken:
- Smoke is pumped into the sewer main via manholes to predetermined areas,
- Inspectors visit properties in the affected area, and
- Inspectors will look at where smoke is escaping.
An indication of an illegal stormwater connection will be, for example, smoke emitting from house gutters via downpipes.
The next stage of inspections will start in August 2009 and will continue for a maximum of three months from the date of commencement.
A Notice of Entry will be hand delivered to each property in the area at least 24 hours before smoke testing takes place.
Areas to be smoke tested in the next stage of inspections are shown on the attached maps. These maps show the declared sewer area boundaries, properties, sewer mains and manholes.
