Townsville offers exciting and diverse experiences with a mix of reef, outback, rainforest, beautiful beaches and all the benefits of a big city, so it’s not hard to see why so many people are attracted to such a spectacular part of Australia.
Magnetic Island is one of Townsville’s most popular tourist destinations. Magnetic Island is a world heritage listed island, and the only residential island on Australia’s coast. Magnetic Island, better known as ‘Maggie’ to the locals, offers superb walking tracks for visitors and residents which weave through lush bushland with magnificent views of the coast. Maggie is famous for its sustainable practices, and is listed as a Solar City, under the Australian Government Solar Cities project. For more information about Maggie, please visit Queensland Holidays.
The Strand is another popular location for visitors and locals in Townsville. The Strand is a great place for swimming and beach activities, with an exciting, energetic atmosphere, and various playgrounds and activities for children, youth and adults. The Strand stretches 2.2km along the beachfront, and is host to a variety of markets and entertainment all year round! The Strand attracts in excess of 1.2 million visitors a year!
Paluma is north of Townsville city, and is in the vicinity of the popular northern beaches. Paluma offers extensive rainforests with a wide array of wildlife and birdlife. When visiting Paluma be sure to pack a picnic and visit Little Crystal Creek or Big Crystal Creek, both are ideal for swimming, camping (permit required), and bushwalking!
