About the Artwork
Inspired by Outback Queensland, this wheel-thrown and altered basket captures the dry bony landscape colours and textures of this part of the country. I enjoy pushing the clay to its limits by combining techniques and using the slip trailer to create colour and surface texture. The dry season sun powers my solar-powered studio and electric kilns, and gives me energy to produce works such as this.
About the Artist
Originally from Australia, Fiona Banner trained in ceramics in the UK and then returned to Australia in 1981. A long-term Townsville resident, she enjoys “the tropical life even through the harsh wet seasons and our changing climate”. She also professes to “love all aspects of ceramics” and shares her skills by teaching the community.
