About the Artwork
Enlightenment draws its inspiration from the lotus, a familiar feature of North Queensland, especially along the Ross River. Rising from the water, the lotus embodies the quiet resilience of life’s journey. From emerging bud to radiant bloom, and finally to seed pod, each stage speaks of growth, maturity, renewal, and the wisdom that comes through experience.
The unfolding life cycle of the lotus reflects our own, reminding us that transformation is continuous and that every stage has its own beauty and purpose. In this work, the lotus becomes a symbol of enlightenment not as a destination, but as an ongoing journey of growth, change, and renewal.
About the Artist
Townsville-based artist Margaret Crawford holds a Diploma in Fine Arts and originally trained as a painter. However, upon working with clay in 2014, she discovered a medium that felt immediately natural and inspiring. As the artist states, “Ceramics opened up new possibilities, allowing me to create both functional and sculptural works, while drawing on many years of experience in painting and printmaking.” Margaret’s practice combines surface design, form, and storytelling, integrating two-dimensional techniques into three-dimensional artworks.
Her work has been recognised through several awards at the Townsville Art Awards, including Overall Winner, Ceramic (2021); Overall Winner, Painting (2018); and 3D Winner, Ceramic (2019, 2020). Margaret’s work is held in the collections of James Cook University, Townsville University Hospital, Barrier Reef Institute of TAFE, and Townsville City Council.
