About the Artwork

Inspired by the bold simplicity of Brutalism, I approach each ceramic piece as a micro-architectural project. Saekdong Vase focuses on the intersection of rigid structural forms and the rhythmic beauty of traditional Korean aesthetics. I utilised the Saekdong colour palette, typically found in traditional Korean dress, to define the various planes and surfaces of the structure. By assigning different colours to each ‘wall’ of the ceramic body, I have transformed a static object into a vibrant, multifaceted architectural form that celebrates both global modernism and my personal cultural identity.

About the Artist

Juyeon Kim is a contemporary ceramic artist based in Melbourne. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Chung-Ang University and a Diploma of Family Counselling. Her practice merges technical mastery with a deep exploration of the human psyche, translating internal states into evocative, organic ceramic forms.

Kim’s professional standing is highlighted by her selection as a Finalist for the fortyfivedownstairs Emerging Artist Award (2023) and the Vivid Design Competition (2025). Her work has been widely showcased, including at the Melbourne Ceramic Fair (2024) and the Brisbane Affordable Art Fair (2026). Her works are held in private collections and continue to bridge the gap between fine art, contemporary design, and psychological inquiry.
