About the Artwork
Fairy-wrens frequently use banksia shrubs as vital vantage points and hunting grounds to forage for insects. When paired together, the fairywren and banksia create a powerful symbolic contrast representing vibrant, joyful life flourishing alongside rugged resilience and rebirth. The striking contrast beautifully balances the delicate with indestructible nature of Australia’s fauna and flora. It illustrates that lightness, joy, and freedom can still bloom and find comfort right on top of life’s hardest, most weathered obstacles.
Banksia pods are legendary for their relationship with fire, in that heat mediates a transformation to a new state. In the same way, clay undergoes a transformation in fire.
About the Artist
Liz Ranger-Craven immigrated to Australia in 2011 from South Africa and currently resides in Mackay. She studied Fine Art, majoring in printmaking and sculpture, and is primarily a self-taught ceramic artist. Through clay, she discovered a way to best explore her creativity. Over the years, Liz has participated in various exhibitions in South Africa and Australia, and is a recipient of several awards and accolades.
Liz has been commissioned to do several large public works and private commissions. Her pieces are bold, covered in intricate surface design, detail, and texture. These facets are integral to her work, where form and features relay a narrative. She invites the viewer to take a closer look and to contemplate something often construed as mundane, but is something beautiful. At the core of Liz’s works is an ode to the Earth, highlighting her passion for the conservation of our natural world.
