About the Artwork

Wu Lou of Sun draws from the traditional gourd form, a symbol of protection and continuity in my heritage, and carries that meaning through the unpredictable alchemy of anagama wood firing. Over several days in the kiln, the vessel was shaped by flame, ash, and time, with the surface recording every shift in atmosphere. The ash settled and melted into a natural glaze, creating warm orange blooms and soft grey flame marks that feel like sunlight and shadow captured directly on the clay.

For me, Wu Lou of Sun is a moment of myth making rooted in joy and optimism, symbolising a protective gourd touched by flame, carrying the delight of chance, the warmth of flame, and the belief that beauty can emerge from unpredictability.

About the Artist

Jason Mak is a ceramic artist and one half of YELLOWOSOPHY, a ceramic duo offering a bright world where sunlight, myth, and gentle optimism shape every form. His practice blends materiality and glaze technology with myths, creating vessels, patterns and sculptural beings that feel subconscious yet cerebral. Jason’s work—which draws from his connection to the oceans, geology, cosmologies, and his personal heritage—often features organic forms, porcelain shells, and tide‑born figures. Each piece is an object that glows with confidence and joy.

Jason recently won Second Place at the 2026 Sydney Royal Easter Show and was selected as a participant in the 2026 Clay Gulgong Throwdown Under, affirming his growing presence in Australia’s ceramic landscape. His sculptures sit at the intersection of whimsy and reverence, offering viewers a moment of curiosity and sun‑lit joy.
