About the Artwork

The Kastellorizians, a significant Greek diaspora community in Australia, trace their roots to the Dodecanese island of Kastellorizo (aka Megisti). Driven by economic hardship and war, particularly between the 1910s and 1950s, many sought new opportunities in Australia. My photographic series Descendants: A Kastellorizian Story celebrates over a century of the Kastellorizian Association in Australia. It showcases portraits of women and girls of Kastellorizian descent, featuring them in traditional and historical clothing and jewellery, some items over 100 years old. The strength and resilience of the Kastellorizian women has ensured the stability and growth of the community. The six subjects in this composite image from the series are all descendants from Kastellorizian migrants. There are 80,000 people living in Australia who identify as a descendant from Kastellorizo.
