About the Artwork

This portrait is a contemporary expression of identity, culture and connection to Country. William Koiki Mabo-Cohen is a multidisciplinary artist working across dance, music and sculpture. A grandson of Eddie Koiki Mabo and of the Meriam people of Mer Island, he draws from his Nywaigi, Gumbaynggirr and South Sea Islander heritage. This portrait represents his, and his peoples’, ongoing custodianship of Country.

About the Artist

Braden Smith is a Townsville-based photographer and videographer, creating visual stories across the land and seas of North Queensland. Drawn to the raw beauty of the region, his work captures moments where people, place, and nature intersect—from remote coastlines and coral reefs to life lived on Country.

With a strong connection to the marine environment, Braden’s storytelling is grounded in respect for the Great Barrier Reef and the communities who have cared for these places for generations. He has a keen interest in working alongside Traditional Owners to help share stories of Country, culture, and custodianship through authentic, considered visuals.

Whether above or below the waterline, Braden’s work is driven by a belief that powerful imagery can foster connection, understanding, and care for the places that shape us.
