About the Artwork
This work explores the quiet strength and beauty of coastal flora, using the form of seed cones from the Casuarina equisetifolia (coastal she-oak). The repeating layers and pointed forms on the body of the work suggest the botanical shape and structure of the she-oak’s seed cones, which are both protective in function and architectural in form. The rust-coloured glaze reflects the weathered coastal environment of the tree, as an earthy surface treatment reminiscent of sand, bark, and salt-worn materials. Resilience shaped by exposure and endurance can also be strong and beautiful.
About the Artist
Donalee Moriarty is a ceramic artist based in Ipswich, Queensland, whose practice is centred on experimenting with clays and firing processes, drawing inspiration from architectural and natural forms, as well as weathered surfaces and textures. Donalee holds a Master of Environmental Management, and is currently completing a Master of Visual Arts at the Queensland College of Art and Design, Griffith University.
Her practice involves various hand-building techniques at her home studio. She has previously been a finalist in several awards, including the National Emerging Art Prize (2024), the North Queensland Ceramic Awards (2022), and the Siliceous Award for Ceramic Excellence (2023). She is looking forward to being part of an upcoming exhibition Brutalist/Baroque at the Ipswich Art Gallery (September – November 2026).
