About the Artwork
Finding quiet in a busy life is like standing still within a throng of rushing people and seeing the tranquillity in the chaos of the blur. This vessel stands strong when viewed from the front or rear, but nearly disappears when viewed from the sides, adaptable to the space and whims of the world around it—a bit like me.
Remembering to Breathe (3) is made from ‘leftover’ clay—scraps from bags and already decorated remnants from previous works. By utilising this clay, I am making do and maximising my limited resources, with minimal reconstituting.
I chose to fire the work in 1100°C heat to consume less energy, because the world consumes too much and it is also kinder on my precious kiln. The lower firing temperature means I can’t rely on heat for the development of interesting surfaces, forcing me to improvise with shape, texture and mark making.
About the Artist
Sam Matthews, aka ‘moo’, is a ceramic artist residing in Far North Queensland (FNQ). Her works are inspired by the natural environment, with a focus on immersion in, interaction with, and discovery of, a sense of place and peace within it.
After moving to FNQ in her early 20s, Sam has made her home in various rural and forested areas throughout the Douglas Shire, further strengthening her connection to the region’s landscapes. Sam has initiated, coordinated, and co-designed several large-scale community art mosaic projects, managing resources and people, liaising with stakeholders, tutoring participants, and collaborating with other established local artists.
In the last couple of years, Sam has participated in several group exhibitions with Port Douglas Artists Inc, which has greatly contributed to her growth as an artist. In 2025, Sam entered the QLD Regional Art Awards, winning the Remote Artist Award—an achievement she sees as a transformative opportunity.
