About the Artwork
This tall vase was thrown in two sections, then precisely combined. Trimming allows the shape to be further refined, and creating the right curves is very important to me.
Covering the piece with a crystalline glaze transforms it; there is a science in making a crystalline glaze work, and I strive to understand this process so that the glaze creates a work of nature to enhance the piece.
This piece features a number of large crystals grown over many hours in an electric kiln, then etched in acid.
About the Artist
Interested in pottery from the age of 18, Tony Di Giacomo turned his serious attention to it after retiring from teaching in 2016. Since then, he has enjoyed great success; he has been selected to exhibit in the North Queensland Ceramics Awards for the past five consecutive iterations, and won the 3D section of the Townsville Art Society Art Awards (2021, 2022, 2023). He also won the ceramic section of the Hinchinbrook Art Award (2022).
In 2026, he participated in the Perc Tucker Gallery exhibition In the Heart of the North, Part 2.
