About the Artwork
Ukiyo represents a collaboration between my partner Tatsuya Tsutsui and me. Tatsuya made the form; I contributed the overglaze decoration. Ukiyo explores themes of water and floating.
The name of this piece translates as floating/ fleeting/transient world. In its modern usage, the term Ukiyo is used to refer to a state of mind emphasising living in the moment, and being detached from the difficulties of life.
About the Artist
Born in Holland, Johanna De Maine moved to Australia at a young age and has lived in the UK, Australia, and Japan. Johanna commenced potting in 1971, and since then she has had in excess of 40 solo exhibitions, participated in over 200 group exhibitions, and won numerous awards. Her work is represented in the National Gallery of Australia as well as in public art galleries, museums, and government collections both in Australia and overseas. Her work is in collections of HRH Queen Elizabeth II of England, Crown Prince Frederik and Princess Mary of Denmark, and the Governor General of Australia.
Johanna’s partner, master porcelain artist Tatsuya Tsutsui gravitated to ceramics after completing a degree in oil painting at Musashino Art University, Tokyo. The two live and work between Meringandan West in Toowoomba and Kyushu in Japan. As well as making collaborative work, the two have individual practices.
