About the Artwork

The Gods is an homage to birdlife and all the wisdom, song, and joy that birds contribute to our lives. I am intrigued by the endless variety of forms, colours, patterns, and plumage we can see if we look to birds, and try to capture something of the character, delicate beauty, and power of these creatures. These are only three of many gods being created as an ongoing project. I will continue to work with spontaneous slab clay forms, applying drawn patterns to clay, and experimenting with combinations of sculptural form and colour to see what bird spirits visit me next.

About the Artist

Thea Katauskas is a Canberra-based multidisciplinary artist working mainly in sculpture and painting. She has been creating imaginary bird characters in ceramic form since 2019, and remains inspired by museum specimens, wildlife photography, and her local environment. In 2025 she exhibited paintings and sculptural works in the Birdland show at Walkway Gallery, South Australia, following an artist’s residency in South Australia to observe the Bool Lagoon–protected wetlands and birdlife.

She regularly exhibits her sculptures at Grainger Gallery in Canberra. Trained in sculpture and printmaking, Thea has held various solo exhibitions of paintings, sculpture, and prints in Bordertown, Canberra, Brisbane, and Switzerland. Her works are held in private collections in USA, UK, Australia, France, and Switzerland.
