About the Artwork
Built from hand-formed slabs and finished with individually sculpted feathers, this vessel explores the relationship between stillness and movement. Two wings, distinguished by their contrasting colours, animate the form creating a sense of lift and momentum despite the permanence of the fired clay.
The third side of the vessel remains smooth and uncluttered, offering a quiet counterpoint to the textured surfaces. This deliberate contrast invites the eye to move between restraint and complexity, stillness and motion, allowing the work to shift depending on the viewer’s perspective. Such subtle changes in perspective allow a static form to feel unexpectedly alive.
About the Artist
Taryn Powick is an emerging ceramic artist based in Canberra. Her sculptural practice is inspired by birds and organic forms, combining hand-formed feathers, layered surfaces, and contrasting textures to create works that invite slow observation and shifting perspectives. Through curiosity, experimentation, and an intuitive approach to making, Taryn seeks to evoke emotion through her work via movement and a sense of life within the clay.
