Local green thumbs are invited to lend a hand to the land this weekend, with Townsville City Council hosting a community planting day along the Ross River.

The riverscape along Annandale will undergo a transformation with more than 500 native trees and shrubs due to be planted as part of the Tree Our Town: Community Planting Day event.

Council’s Environmental Restoration team, joined by community volunteers of all ages, will complete the re-vegetation works along the Ross River, with access via the Palmetum, from 8:30am to 10am this Saturday.

Divisional Councillor Suzy Batkovic invited residents from across the city to pitch in and help make a difference at this free, family-friendly event.

These community tree planting days are a great chance for families to get the kids involved in beautifying the city and making a positive impact on the environment.

“Townsville has an awesome outdoor lifestyle, and Council is committed to improving our green spaces and restoring our natural environments wherever we can,” Cr Batkovic said.

“These community tree planting days are a great chance for families to get the kids involved in beautifying the city and making a positive impact on the environment.

“We would love a big turnout on Saturday, and encourage everyone to wear sun protection, gloves and closed-in shoes.

“For those who join in on the day there will be a native plant to take home as a thank-you, so come along, have some fun and help make Townsville a greener city.”

Council hosts multiple tree planting days each year, and community members who have an idea for a tree planting location are encouraged to get in touch.
