Little Athletics Queensland announced last week that next year’s event would be heading north, with Townsville set to host the Championships event from 19–21 March 2027.
Delivered with the valued support of Council, the Championships will once again bring the excitement of state-level competition to North Queensland.
This event last visited Townsville in 2023 and was met with outstanding support from the local community, athletes, and volunteers.
Hosting the 2027 McDonald’s State Championships in Townsville provides a fantastic opportunity to showcase the breadth of Queensland, while also reducing travel demands for many of our regional athletes and families.
Little Athletics Queensland CEO, Christopher Davis, said the return to Townsville reflects the organisation’s commitment to delivering major events across the state.
“We are thrilled to be bringing the 2027 McDonald’s State Championships back to Townsville,” Mr Davis said.
“Our 2023 event demonstrated the region’s ability to host high-quality competition, and we’re excited to once again partner with Townsville City Council to deliver an exceptional experience for our athletes and families.
“Hosting the Championships in North Queensland not only highlights this vibrant region but also plays an important role in making the event more accessible for athletes from regional and remote areas.
“We look forward to seeing the entire Little Athletics community come together in Townsville in March 2027.”
North Queensland produces incredible young talent, and bringing this event back to the region means more families will have the opportunity to compete without the barrier of long travel.
Townsville City Council Deputy Mayor and Townsville 2032 Legacy Working Group Chair Suzy Batkovic said securing the championships was a boon to North Queensland and rural and regional athletes across the state.
“Securing the 2027 McDonald’s State Championships for Townsville is a significant win for North Queensland,” Cr Batkovic said.
“North Queensland produces incredible young talent, and bringing this event back to the region means more families will have the opportunity to compete without the barrier of long travel.
“With Brisbane 2032 on the horizon, events like this play an important role in building confidence, pathways and inspiration for the next generation of athletes right here in North Queensland.”
The McDonald’s State Championships is the pinnacle event on the Little Athletics Queensland calendar, bringing together athletes from across the state to compete for state titles and best performances.
Little Athletics Queensland also acknowledges the support of Sports Marketing Australia in helping to secure the 2027 event for Townsville. Further event information will be released in due course.
