Video: Rose garden refurbishment

Mayor Nick Dametto:

This morning we're down here at Queen's Garden with the outdoor spaces crew planting some beautiful roses in the Queens Garden rose garden. A number of these rose bushes have actually been damaged over the last 12 months through humidity, rain and even possums and people getting to them.

19 new rose bushes going in today, and some great little metal cages that have been whipped up by a Boilermaker team so we can protect them from, you wouldn't have guessed it, the possums wanting to eat the rosebuds and the leaves.

Naomi Shoobridge:

Because they'll eat all the leaves they'll strip them to nothing the young plants, they'll eat the flowers when they come. They're a real menace.

The Queen's Garden Rose garden has been operational for over 130 years, and it's an integral part of Townsville's history. We want to make sure that we're continuing to invest in this area so that we can show this off not only to visitors, but people that love the gardens here in Townsville.

Naomi Shoobridge:

The locals just love coming here and the smelling the roses. We have people that walk through here every day just to come and smell the roses. It's really great for the community they really love it.

It doesn't matter who you are in Townsville, you should always take time to smell the roses and it's a great chance to do that right here at the Queen's Gardens.
