About the Artwork

This is a portrait of Gerónimo, a close friend and architect with whom I have shared ongoing conversations around a specific contemporary concern: the difficulty of measuring oneself constantly in relation to productivity. I chose Gerónimo because this tension forms a real part of his personal and professional experience.

The work focuses on the moment in which that dynamic is interrupted—an instant of pause in which the body comes to rest and an awareness of accumulated time emerges. The scene takes place in a domestic bathroom, a private and unguarded space associated with moments of intimacy, where external performance falls away.

The gradual draining of the bathtub functions as a quiet register of this process: not as an emphatic symbolic gesture, but as an accumulation of small losses that only become visible when one stops to observe.

About the Artist

Manuel Moreno Guirao is a Spanish-born painter based in Victoria whose work engages with figurative painting as a narrative space. His images are constructed through careful chromatic decisions, where colour operates as a structuring force rather than a descriptive one, shaping both form and mood.

His works often originate from studies made from life and are later reconfigured in the studio to expand the narrative and conceptual potential of each reference. Through subtle distortions and controlled dissonances, he builds atmospheres that carry meaning without relying on text, allowing the image to remain open, ambiguous, and psychologically charged.

Manuel has collaborated on public mural projects with universities and local councils, including QUT, Brisbane, and is a national prize winner in Spain. His work has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions and commissioned by private collectors.
