Portrait of Edwin Denton
Oil on wood
120 x 120 cm

About the Artwork

This portrait celebrates the life and work of Edwin Dentin, now 102 years old. A talented musician, ferociously dedicated to the oboe, Edwin began with the RAAF band and was part of the Melbourne music scene for over 50 years, performing in the MSO and many other ensembles. His music also featured on an album of The Little River Band. Edwin’s passion for music extended to birdsong, always whistling to any nearby bird. The background of the artwork reflects Edwin’s beginnings.

In Edwin, I see the magic and alchemy of art: how it connects us to something far greater; how art is so often a love letter to the natural world and the landscape that surrounds us; how we make songs and paintings inspired by the power and mystery of art and creation. This same majestic presence fuelled generations of artists before us.
