About the Artwork

While photographing Alyssandra for another project, I captured a high key image that would be elevated by the cyanotype process given Alyssandra’s fair complexion and captivating blue eyes. Alyssandra’s hair is sweeping across her face, covering one eye. When printed using the cyanotype process, this wistful image feels almost romantic. The smooth paper surface allows for sharp detail while the paper fibres, visible in the highlights, add a tactile quality to the print. The image was taken at Cape Pallarenda on the edge of a storm. Alyssandra was watching the change as the sun broke through the cloud.

About the Artist

Sonia Warrell is a Townsville-based photographer whose practice centres on an evocative exploration of time, place, and the inevitability of change. By utilising impressionistic photography techniques and alternative processes, she creates visual narratives that transcend literal representation. Her specialised work with multiple exposure photography is conducted largely in-camera, reflecting a commitment to the raw, spontaneous chemistry between the lens and the light.

For Sonia, the heart of her craft lies in the delicate balance of creation and erasure. She firmly believes that a technique capable of both creating beauty and destroying it in a single shutter press adds a profound thrill to the artistic process. This inherent risk not only heightens the emotional stakes of her work but also elevates the value of the subject, capturing fleeting moments that feel both permanent and ephemeral.
