Portrait of Alyssandra Higgins
Archival pigment inkjet print on Ilford Gold Fibre Gloss (310gsm)
75 x 51 cm

About the Artwork

The image is made up of two exposures that explore time spent in a place. Alyssandra’s blue eyes, fair complexion and colouring blends with the monsoonal blues of a passing storm. At the time this image was created, Alyssandra was home from studying at NIDA. The image draws attention to her thinking (head within a head) as her eyes loom over an ocean view, reminiscent of a movie poster. The work is unique because it is created in-camera without previewing between exposures.

About the Artist

Sonia Warrell is a Townsville-based photographer whose practice centres on an evocative exploration of time, place, and the inevitability of change. By utilising impressionistic photography techniques and alternative processes, she creates visual narratives that transcend literal representation. Her specialised work with multiple exposure photography is conducted largely in-camera, reflecting a commitment to the raw, spontaneous chemistry between the lens and the light.

For Sonia, the heart of her craft lies in the delicate balance of creation and erasure. She firmly believes that a technique capable of both creating beauty and destroying it in a single shutter press adds a profound thrill to the artistic process. This inherent risk not only heightens the emotional stakes of her work but also elevates the value of the subject, capturing fleeting moments that feel both permanent and ephemeral.
