About the Artwork
When I took this photograph, Ebony was launching her second album. She was nervous after a bad day, with the sound-check being tricky and the van breaking down while trying to take gear to Camden Club. She is a very expressive subject, and two photos rarely look the same, but it was watching her perform and feelings involved that caught my eye. She is used to me taking photos, so ignores my presence, which is perfect. The atmosphere was dark as usual, and I love that there are no disturbing backgrounds.
About the Artist
Chrissy Maguire runs a geologist consultancy and uses her camera when travelling to employees and the Aussie bush. A self-taught photographer, she has been taking photographs of Townsville’s arts community theatre, dance orchestra and singers’ performances for about 35 years. As she says: “I love the eyes and expressions, be they doubt, nerves and then relief!”
Relishing in light and the moment, Chrissy says she often sings the songs when editing her photographs. “Photographing is not my day job and I am not a professional … but it is my love, particularly faces.”
