About the Artwork
As my work has a focus on the endurance and elevation of women, I found myself deeply inspired by the work and philosophies of Lindy Lee, one of Australia’s foremost contemporary artists.
Lindy is shown in a moment of quiet stillness; enveloped by her work, she pauses to fully inhabit the present. In black and white, the image adopts a timeless character, stripping away visual distractions, inviting the viewer to settle on the intimacy of the scene. The calm expression communicates volumes through silence, conveying a sense of reflection and inner peace.
An energetic as well an aesthetic compulsion drove me to meet and photograph Lindy, to capture—in a moment—her unique energy. Lindy serves as a powerful example of what women can achieve as the enduring nature of woman is activated.
About the Artist
Charmaine Lyons is a Queensland-based multidisciplinary artist working across photography and ceramics. She has a particular interest in portraiture and is drawn to creating work that explores feminist and environmental concepts. Her solo exhibition Women United, held at Gympie Regional Gallery in 2020, included 200 portraits of women, reflecting her commitment to social justice and elevating the voice of women.
