About the Artwork
This portrait of Timothy Henry builds on my decadelong work with handmade large-format camera obscurae, crafted from discarded materials. These sculptural instruments produce dreamlike images that question our relationship to consumption and the environment. This has been expanded to allow the sitter to write their own narrative directly onto the projected image inside the camera, fusing a single image and testimony into a visceral, unmediated photograph.
The work contrasts dominant notions of success, often defined by visibility, status, or wealth, with the quiet resilience required to navigate life’s challenges beyond public recognition.
Timothy was chosen for his clarity in articulating these daily struggles and lived experiences, and for the deliberate ethical decisions that shape his daily life. His presence embodies the unseen perseverance and meaningful achievements that this project seeks to honour.
