Rochelle Morris: I'm Rochelle Morris and I'm one of the artists exhibiting in Townsville's Ephemera: Trace-less sculpture festival this year.
For this video, I've created a small-scale version of my work titled Strand Lines to demonstrate my process and the concept behind it.
This piece is site-responsive using plant pulp pressed into sand to mimic the shifting patterns left by water and wind along the coastline.
The process begins by shaping the sand itself, forming raised areas that reference tidal patterns and the movement of water over land.
Once the form is in place, I prepare the plant pulp. This starts with soaking and blending plant fibres, creating a material that is fluid yet mouldable.
I use locally sourced materials like garden waste and fallen eucalyptus bark, working with what's already present rather than taking from the land. By using plant pulp in this way, I'm thinking about the traces we leave behind, both human and environmental.
Just like the tide, this work will shift, break down and return to the Earth, embodying the theme of Trace-less.
