Megan Lawler: Hi, my name is Megan.
Tegan Murphy: Hi, my name is Tegan, and we are visual arts teachers at Ryan Catholic College, located in Townsville. Ryan Catholic College is home to over 2,000 students and over 255 staff.
After our successful entry into Strand Ephemera, we have had a huge amount of interest from students and teachers to work collaboratively to see our ideas come to fruition.
Megan Lawler: Our artwork Debris Couture is going to be a runway of mannequins walking out of the ocean up the foreshore of The Strand. They'll be dressed in wearable art pieces made by students out of trash collected from the foreshore of The Strand and Pallarenda, showcasing the amount to rubbish humans dump into the waterways.
The trash calibre outfits will spark conversation and awareness of the environmental impact upon our decisions to litter, as humans do due to the models emerging straight out of the ocean. Sporting couture made out of recycled materials upon our Townsville Strand.
Tegan Murphy: We have a range of students contributing to our artwork, including our preps through to grade 4 and our junior campus, our First Nations team and their students, and grade 5 through to grade 12 at our afterschool Ryan Collaborative program.
Environmental sustainability is an integral part of our Ryan Catholic College faith, curriculum and strategic priorities here at Ryan Catholic College.
Megan Lawler: The Diocese of Townsville is blessed with diverse landscapes and seascapes. Ryan Catholic College recognises care for creation is a sacred duty each person is responsible for.
We strive to assist our communities to grow in wonder and appreciation of God's creation and together, journey toward living more sustainably and socially just.
