About the Artwork
Between Worlds explores transformation as a state of becoming rather than a singular event. Combining the vessel with architectural and figurative forms, the work draws upon symbolic traditions in which the moth represents metamorphosis, intuition, and movement between seen and unseen worlds. Built entirely by hand using traditional coil-building techniques, every relief and ornament records the slow accumulation of labour, allowing the process of making to become embedded within the finished object. Rather than presenting transformation as dramatic or instantaneous, the work suggests that change unfolds gradually through sustained attention, resilience, and the quiet forces that shape both the object and the maker over time.
About the Artist
Casey Anne St John is a Sydney-based ceramic artist creating hand-built sculptural vessels using traditional coil-building techniques. She holds a Diploma of Ceramics from Gymea TAFE and was awarded the Award of Highest Excellence upon graduation in 2019. Her work has been exhibited in the National Emerging Art Prize, Hazelhurst Regional Gallery’s Trail Blazers exhibition, Clifton School of Arts’ Presence, and numerous group exhibitions across NSW.
Casey has completed private commissions for collectors in Australia and internationally, and her practice explores memory, transformation, architecture, and the natural world through contemporary ceramic sculpture. She is currently expanding her practice towards larger sculptural and installation-based works.
