About the Artwork
During a residency in Japan, I was captivated by shimenawa, woven rice straw ropes that enclose and encircle sacred spaces. The textural quality of the ropes appealed to my interest in woven basketry. The idea of shimenawa binding and securing space aligned with my exploration of the vessel as an enclosed object. For Bind, I began to expand on my coiling technique, twisting and braiding the clay coils, swinging them in a circular motion to enclose and ‘tie off’ the interior space of the form. This work also reflects on ideas around boundaries and enclosure, prompting us to consider spaces that protect and embrace, as well as those that exclude or deny.
About the Artist
Julie Pennington is a Canberra-based artist whose practice explores the subtleties and complexities of pattern and texture through hand-built sculptural works. Her career in the visual arts began in the field of textile design, before pursuing her interest in ceramics and completing a Diploma of Ceramics at Moss Vale TAFE in 2010. Julie has exhibited nationally and internationally and has been a prize winner in several major ceramic competitions, including the Gosford Ceramic Award (2025), North Queensland Award Scott Brickworks Prize (2018), Stanthorpe Art Prize Significant 3D Award (2016). Artbank acquired two works for their collection in 2024, and Alliance Building Group Canberra commissioned two pieces in 2026. Julie has undertaken artist residencies in Australia, Spain, and most recently at Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park, Japan, in 2024. Julie is represented by Jennings Kerr Gallery, NSW, where she has had solo shows in 2023, 2024, and 2025.
