Massively popular park enhancements underway at The Strand

The hugely popular playground is designed for small children and is a magnet for families visiting The Strand. The park will be enhanced with new playground equipment and a new sandpit area.

Acting Mayor and divisional councillor Ann-Maree Greaney said parks played an essential part in encouraging a health and active community.

“It’s really important for Townsville families to have safe, inclusive and fun parks and playgrounds to visit. Council is continuously renewing playgrounds across the city to make sure they’re up to scratch and bringing joy to families,” Cr Greaney said.

“Sister Kenny Toddler Park is remarkably popular, so we’re very pleased to be bringing in brand-new playground equipment and a new sandpit area for little ones to use.

“The park has always been a hit with kids – even with my own two boys when they were little – so I’m excited to see what it looks like with this new equipment when it reopens next week.”

Council held community consultation earlier this year to understand the types of enhancements users would like to see at the park. More than 760 responses were taken on board by Council during the planning stage.

Cr Greaney said the response to the feedback showed just how important this park was to Townsville families.

“Feedback from our community is vitally important for Council’s projects because we want to invest into what residents value the most. Having more than 700 pieces of feedback on the enhancement of Sister Kenny Toddler Park made it easier for Council to understand what residents want to see in the refreshed park,” she said.

“I’m really looking forward to hearing feedback on the park when it reopens – I have a feeling it will be a real hit with little ones.”

Works at Sister Kenny Toddler Park started late last week and will continue through to Friday. The enhanced park will reopen to families next week, weather conditions permitting.
