Peppercorn lease paves way for Men’s Shed’s future growth

The bustling Upper Ross Men’s Shed’s plans to expand are a step closer after the group secured a 10-year peppercorn lease extension from Townsville City Council.

The $1 per annum rent deal gives the 60-plus member shed in Rasmussen the certainty needed to continue its good work.

Upper Ross Men’s Shed President Graham Kiehne said it was great to have the long-term lease secured.

“Men’s sheds are all about community – we have members who are facing illness and other stress in life, and they can come here and have a general conversation, sit down and enjoy some companionship and do a bit of work, whatever they want to do."

Mr Kiehne said the group had outgrown its current site and now needed a bigger shed, a problem that only highlighted how well-attended and utilised the current facility was.

“Now the lease is secured we are able to look at rolling out our plans to put in toilet facilities and also to expand the work shed,” he said.

“Men’s sheds are all about community – we have members who are facing illness and other stress in life, and they can come here and have a general conversation, sit down and enjoy some companionship and do a bit of work, whatever they want to do.

“That’s what it’s all about and what we strive for here.”

Divisional councillor Kristian Price said the Upper Ross Men’s Shed was an invaluable community asset and one Council was pleased to support through the provision of a peppercorn lease.

“Men’s sheds are welcoming and busy environment that bring blokes together,” Cr Price said.

“Whether it’s to learn or practice different skills, talk over personal issues and offer advice, or just find a way to keep busy, men’s sheds are there to offer support and a community service – this is obviously something Council is very happy to support.

“The Upper Ross Men’s Shed has big expansion plans in the works and I’m glad that this long-term lease will provide them the stability they need for the future.”

Council’s community lease program supports community groups, sporting clubs, theatre groups and scout groups to benefit from $4.91 million in subsidised rent in the 2025/26 FY, in addition to subsidised rates and utilities.
