New hours enhance safety

Council is implementing new operating hours at the Riverway Lagoons to increase community safety at the popular facility.

Mayor Nick Dametto said Council will lock the Lagoon’s gates outside of supervised hours.

“We know how popular our Riverway Lagoons are, which is why safety is paramount,” Cr Dametto said.

“We don’t want people putting themselves and community members at risk by swimming unsupervised outside of these hours.

“While the operating hours have always been from dawn to when lifeguards clock off for the day, we will be going one step further to enhance community safety by locking the gates outside of supervised hours.”

Supervised hours by Surf Life Saving Queensland are 9am to 6pm daily – the facility’s gates will be locked between 6pm and 9am.

“We’re always looking at ways to increase safety across our facilities, and these actions follow recommendations from Workplace Health and Safety Queensland. We appreciate the community’s cooperation,” he said.

“Council is now reviewing lifeguard hours so supervision reflects the most suitable operating times for the community.

“We understand that this is an adjustment for lagoon users, however in this case safety must come first.”
