Riverway Lagoons

The Riverway Lagoons cover an area in size of more than three Olympic swimming pools. The lagoons are nestled among shady raintrees, with the picturesque Ross River providing a peaceful backdrop. The surrounding well established raintrees, together with the extensive overhangs of the roof and additional shade structures, provide a protected year-round safe swimming environment.

About Riverway Lagoons

The two distinct lagoon areas vary in depth up to 2m.

The upper lagoon is designed for more formal uses, including an area for swimming laps. The upper lagoon also includes specific areas with handrails and suitable water levels for older people and people with disabilities.

The lower lagoon is more relaxed and is an ideal place for the kids to build sandcastles and play in shallow water while the rest of the family lounges on the timber decks in the shade.

Lockers are available for hire at the Riverway Lagoons change rooms.

An AI Drowning Prevention System is in place at the Upper Lagoon to support safer swimming for everyone.

Lynxight is an AI-powered technology that supports lifeguards by monitoring the water using existing cameras and sending real-time alerts to Lifeguards via a wrist-worn device, helping teams respond quickly when every second counts.

Already in use at more than 75 pools across Australia, Lynxight has been working with Royal Life Saving Australia since 2024 to strengthen safety at aquatic facilities nationwide.

We’re proud to bring this added layer of protection to Riverway, helping keep our community safer in the water.

Privacy and Information Notice

Townsville City Council uses the Lynxight AI Drowning Prevention System to support public safety and assist in the identification of potential water safety incidents.

The system uses cameras and artificial intelligence technology to analyse activity within designated swimming areas and generate alerts where a person may require assistance.

Council understands that the system is designed to identify potential safety risks rather than identify individuals. However, in limited circumstances, information captured by the system may contain personal information. Where personal information is incidentally collected through the operation of the system, that information may be used to promote public safety, identify potential drowning or distress events, enable timely intervention and emergency response and supporting incident investigations.

Where personal information is collected or handled through the operation of the system, Council will manage that information in accordance with the Information Privacy Act 2009 (Qld) and Council's Information Privacy Policy. Access to recorded information is restricted to authorised personnel. Personal information will only be used or disclosed where necessary for the purpose outlined above or where authorised or required by law.

In the interest of public health and safety, the following rules apply in and around Riverway Lagoon:

Children must be supervised at all times (Children 0-5 are to be within arm’s reach at all times)
No diving
No running
No water bombing
Be respectful and mindful of others using the area
Bathing attire must be worn in the water, and infants and toddlers must wear nappies.
Alcohol and glass are not permitted
Do not litter – please use the bins provided
No smoking
No pets allowed within the fenced area
