Event Details

Friday 15 August

On VP Day, we honoured World War II veterans at Anzac Memorial Park and Kissing Point Memorial Services.

A re-enactment of Prime Minister Chifley’s “The war is over!” announcement and Townsville Mayor JS Gill’s speech was performed on Flinders Street at the Speckled Hen Balcony, the very spot where Townsville residents heard the news 80 years ago.

That evening, guests enjoyed a truly special experience at the VP80 Dinner Under the Stars, set in the picturesque Queens Gardens. The night was a chance to reflect on Townsville’s place in the defence of our nation and included fine dining from A Touch of Salt, entertainment from the 1RAR Band, 5th USAF Band, and the Pacific Belles.

Saturday 16 August

Townsville’s proud military heritage came to life at the VP80 Community Day.

Held at Jezzine Barracks and The Strand, the free event included:

  • military parades showcasing our city’s historic connection to the armed forces
  • aircraft flypast paying tribute to those who served
  • historic and vehicle displays bringing wartime history to life
  • food stalls with delicious local flavours
  • VP80 Concert & Sky Salute – a breathtaking finale to the day’s celebrations.

Sunday 17 August

The community was invited to the 31st Battalion Association Annual Commemorative Service, held at St James Cathedral before making a pilgrimage to the Townsville War Cemetery.

A pre-game moment of silence for World War II veterans was observed at the Cowboys v Knights game at Queensland Country Bank Stadium.
