VP80: Commemorating 80 Years Since Victory in The Pacific

Townsville City Council, in partnership with the Queensland Government, proudly presents VP80 – a tribute to 80 years since Victory in the Pacific and the end of World War II.

Friday 15 August

Honour our veterans on VP Day.

Join us on Friday 15 August as we remember and support our veterans at Anzac Park and Kissing Point Memorial Services, as well as witness a re-enactment of “The war is over!” speech on Flinders Street.

A night to remember.

That evening, immerse yourself in a truly special experience at the VP80 Dinner Under the Stars, set in the picturesque Queens Gardens.

Fine dining from A Touch of Salt, entertainment from the 1RAR Band and 5th USAF Band, plus the Pacific Belles, and a night to reflect on Townsville’s place in the defence of our nation.


Saturday 16 August

Celebrate Townsville’s garrison history.

Witness Townsville’s proud military heritage come to life at the VP80 Community Day on Saturday 16 August from 11am at Jezzine Barracks and The Strand.

Event highlights:

  • free event – fun for the whole family
  • military parades showcasing our city’s historic connection to the armed forces
  • aircraft flypast paying tribute to those who served
  • historic and vehicle displays bringing wartime history to life
  • food stalls to enjoy delicious local flavours
  • VP80 Concert & Sky Salute – a breathtaking finale to the day’s celebrations

The focus of VP80 has always been intended to not only honour the surviving World War II Veterans – but those who served our country and have now passed. VP80 is an opportunity for descendants and family to honour their fathers, mothers, grandparents, uncles and aunties.


Sunday 17 August

Go on a historic adventure.

Take a self-guided tour of historic war sites around Townsville including the Townsville War Cemetery at Belgian Gardens, and the RAAF Base Townsville Aviation Heritage Centre.

Close off your weekend with a bang!

Sunday afternoon, make your way to Queensland Country Bank Stadium to watch the Cowboys v Knights, and take in the pre-game ceremony acknowledging and remembering our veterans.
