Are You a Loo Legend?

Being a "loo legend" is simple – know what to flush and what to bin. Every time you use the toilet, your choices don't just affect your home, they help protect Townsville's entire wastewater network. Small habits can make a big difference in preventing blockages, overflows and costly repairs.

Only flush the 3 Ps

Your toilet is designed to handle just three things:

  • pee
  • poo
  • toilet paper.

These are the only items that break down quickly and safely in the sewer system. Everything else can cause big problems, even if it seems harmless.

Protect your pipes – bin wet wipes

Wet wipes are one of the biggest troublemakers in our wastewater system. Even when labelled "flushable", they don't break down like toilet paper. Instead, they stay intact, travelling through pipes where they can snag, tangle and build up over time.

Once in the system, wipes can:

  • cause blockages in household pipes and drains
  • lead to messy and expensive sewer backups in your home or street
  • damage pumps and wastewater equipment, increasing maintenance costs
  • combine with fats, oils and grease to form large, solid blockages known as fatbergs.

These issues don't just impact your plumbing, but they put extra pressure on our community's wastewater network and can increase the risk of sewage overflows into the environment.
