Council steps up mosquito management amidst wet season

Council proactively treats known mosquito breeding sites during influxes of rain and around king tides to reduce mosquito outbreaks across the city.

Mayor Nick Dametto said this was important work to lower the risk of infection and disease following hot, wet weather.

"Life in the tropics comes with mosquitoes, but these tiny insects can carry potentially life-threatening viruses like dengue and Ross River fever," Cr Dametto said.

"Council targets both saltmarsh and freshwater mosquitoes species, focusing on known areas across the local government area to reduce mosquito breeding.

"During the past month our team has completed aerial and ground treatments, with ground treatments continuing last week following the double-whammy of heavy rainfall and king tides."

Cr Dametto said residents could do their part to reduce mosquito breeding.

"If you have any containers like buckets or pots in the backyard that have filled with rainwater, make sure you tip them out so mosquitos can't breed in the standing water," he said.

"Mosquitos can find their way into your homes, so spray in dark spaces like under your couch and behind furniture to keep your living spaces mosquito-free.

"It's also a good idea to use mosquito repellent, wearing long sleeves and trousers and avoid being outside during dawn and dusk to reduce your chances of being bitten."
