Community to dig in at Soroptimist Park planting day

Townsville City Council’s Dry Tropics Nursery is gearing up to supply more than 400 native trees for a community planting day at Soroptimist Park this Saturday, as locals are invited to lend a hand and help grow a greener Townsville.

The free event will take place from 8.30am to 10am on Saturday (June 27) at the iconic Soroptimist Park in Belgian Gardens, with residents encouraged to bring family, friends or colleagues along for a hands-on morning of revegetation.

Divisional councillor Ann-Maree Greaney said Council crews had been busy behind the scenes preparing a wide range of hardy native species suited to Townsville’s climate.

“Council’s Ken Armitage Dry Tropics Nursery has been hard at work growing more than 400 native trees for this event, ensuring we’re planting species that will thrive in our local conditions,” Cr Greaney said.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for the community to come together, roll up their sleeves and make a real difference to our environment.

“By planting native trees, we’re strengthening our green corridors, supporting local biodiversity and creating cooler, greener spaces for everyone to enjoy.”

The planting day forms part of Council’s commitment to protecting and enhancing the natural environment while fostering community connection through practical, outdoor initiatives.

“All tools and equipment will be provided, so it’s an easy and accessible way for people of all ages to get involved and give back to their local area,” Cr Greaney said.

Participants are asked to wear enclosed shoes, sun-safe clothing and bring a water bottle. Light refreshments will be provided, and volunteers will also receive a native plant to take home as a thank you.

“Whether you’re a seasoned green thumb or just keen to help out, we’d love to see you there helping to grow something great for Townsville,” Cr Greaney said.
