Video: Nick Dametto officially Sworn In as Townsville's new Mayor

New Townsville Mayor Nick Dametto was officially sworn in by Townsville City Council CEO Joe McCabe on Monday 24 November 2025.

Joe McCabe:

Well, good afternoon, Mayor Elect, Councillors, directors, special guests, ladies and gentlemen.

A warm welcome to today's declaration of office.

Certainly a special day for the mayor elect his family and certainly a special day for the city of Townsville.

The Electoral Commission of Queensland conducted a by-election for the mayor of Townsville City on 15 November 2025.

The electoral commission declared the result of the by-election on 19 November 2025.

The Local Government Act 2009 requires a Councillor to make a declaration of office before they are able to act in the role of Councillor.

I, Anthony Joseph McCabe, as the chief executive officer am authorized to take this declaration of office and must keep a record of that occurring.

The electoral commission has advised that Nicholas Demetto has been elected as a Councillor and Mayor of Townsville City Council.

In accordance with section 169 of the Local Government Act 2009, I invite Mr. Dametto to make his declaration.

Nick Dametto:

Thank you Joe.

I, Nicholas Demetto, have been elected as a Councillor of the Townsville City Council declared that I will faithfully and impartially fulfil my duties in the office in accordance with local government principles and the code of conduct for Councillors under the Local Government Act 2009 to the best of my judgment and abilities.

Ladies and gentlemen, please congratulate and welcome the 48th mayor of Townsville, Councillor Dametto.

Congratulations again.

Nick Dametto:

Councillors, family, friends, media, Council staff, it makes me immensely proud to stand in front of you all today as the 48th mayor of Townsville.

As I've just said in my declaration, I will make sure to be able to discharge my duties to the best of my abilities for the betterment of this city. I want to make sure that we're working together to lead this city into the future.

We've got an ability to make sure that we can bring all parties together without favour for anyone else or fear of not being able not being able to speak up.

I want this to be a new era here in Townsville and for the Townsville City Council.

I want to be able to lead this city in a way that makes sure that we can do the right thing by the good people of Townsville.

I look forward to working with each and every one of the Councillors that are sitting in front of me right now.

The time of the dark times of Townsville I believe are over.

We've got a time where we can look towards the future with hope.

I look forward to being your Mayor and the rest of Townsville's Mayor for the betterment of this whole city.
